Shopping for Clothes 9-12
High school students often like to shop, but don’t pay attention to the cost of items.  Many students go shopping with their families or friends, but know little about the costs of clothing and personal items.  Others have no idea where to find clothing items in the store, and need help understanding where items are located.

Vocabulary is important to shopping for clothes.  Here are some words to review with students:

apparel
outerwear
large
full figure
discount
accessories
petite
junior
sale
small
extra large
layaway
jewelry
medium
plus size
cash

Students can download the clothing cost form and try to estimate the cost of each of the items at their family’s favorite clothing store.  The impact of this lesson is far greater when students complete an estimate of the costs of each item, then investigate the true costs of items either by going to the store independently and recording the costs of items, or investigating online at the sites below.  When the students have completed both their estimate and the true costs of food, they should compare the prices and complete the evaluation sheet.

Students can check prices online. There are many stores with websites.  Students may already have a favorite store.  Two stores listed below carry all the items listed on the Clothing Cost Form.
