Introduction to Job Applications

Filling out an application is a very important part of getting a job. It is often the first impression you make on an employer. Consider your skills and interests and think of a place you would be qualified to work. Most of the information you will need to complete the application is in your portfolio.

You can get job applications in several different places. You should ask for two applications in case you make mistakes. See the list below for suggestions:

  • Your vocational counselor
  • School career counselor
  • Businesses with a help-wanted sign posted
  • Other local businesses
  • Write and request an application from a business with an advertised job opening (classified advertisement from the newspaper or school job board)
  • Ask a friend to get you an application from his or her job
  • Internet (look at web-sites from businesses where you would like to work)

Instructions for completing your application:

  • Read through the entire application before starting to fill it out.
  • Bring your portfolio with you. You will need your personal information, resume, and references when completing the application.
  • All information you put down must be honest and accurate.
  • Use a black ink pen that does not blot or smudge.
  • Spell, capitalize and punctuate correctly.
  • If you are known by a nickname, write it in parentheses after your legal name. (Example: Gomez, Juan (John))
  • Use upper (capital) and lower (small) case letters appropriately.
  • Print clearly and neatly.
  • Use the same type of printing on the entire application.
  • Your printing should be approximately the size of Times – font size 18.
(using a smaller or larger font may cause your application to be thrown away.)
  • Follow the instructions on the application.
  • Do not erase or cross out mistakes.
  • If you make a mistake, get another copy of the application and re-do the application.
  • Do not leave blanks. Use N/A (not applicable) if you do not need to answer a question.
  • Proofread your application for mistakes.
  • Use cursive writing to sign your application and promise that all the information is true.
  • Have a parent or teacher proofread your application for mistakes.
  • Make a copy of your final application to keep in your portfolio.

In addition to the information you have put together in your portfolio, be prepared to fill out the following information:

  • wages or salary desired
  • reason for leaving previous jobs
  • type of accommodations needed
  • date available to start
  • days available to work
  • hours available to work
  • daytime and evening telephone number
  • other names ever used
  • military service

Be prepared to answer the following questions:

  • Have you been convicted of a crime (yes / no)?
  • Do you possess a valid driver’s license?
  • Do you have any relatives that work for the company? If so, list the name of the person.
  • Have you ever worked for this company before?
